The City
Dublin is the capital and greatest city of Ireland at mouth of river Liffey. The city is recorded by the Globalization and World Cities Research Network (GaWC) as a global city, with a positioning of "Alpha-", which places it among the main thirty urban areas on the planet. It is a historical and contemporary centre for education, the arts, administration, economy and industry. During the 18th century, Georgian Dublin became, for a short period, the second largest city of the British Empire and the fifth largest city in Europe. The vast majority of Dublin's most notable architecture dates from 18th century, such as the Four Courts and the Custom House. Temple Bar and Grafton Street are two of the few remaining areas that were not affected by the wave of Georgian reconstruction and maintained their medieval character.
